Creativity Connects Us

Creativity Connects Us

WHAT IS OUT OF THE BOX?

It’s a project by Michigan State University students studying journalism, advertising, design, and video production. We’re part of the Media Sandbox, the creative curriculum and community in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.

Last year, we rebranded one nonprofit, The Disabled Traveler. The team designed a new website, logo and marketing materials for them so that their information on accessibility in national parks can be easily accessed by the public. Besides the rebranding, we traveled to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks in Utah to document each parks' accessible features.

In 2014, we embarked on a 1402-mile road trip, stopping in Indianapolis, Nashville, Dallas, and Austin. We spent one day with a non profit organization in each city to help them with their creative needs — web design, branding, social media, video work, and more. Our goal was to get “out of the (sand)box” and into the real world to discover how creativity connects us.

THIS SPRING, WE PLAN TO HELP YOU, MICHIGAN

We want to give back to the communities in our backyard this year, and challenge you to lend a hand as well!

THE goal

This year, we are planning on helping an organization called Pictures of Hope. Started by Michigan-based photojournalist Linda Solomon, Pictures of Hope aims to show each homeless child that there is hope and they are not forgotten. These children are given the opportunity to use digital cameras and shoot their dreams, and those photos are later printed and sold as cards.

We will be visiting homeless shelters around mid-Michigan to give photography tutorials and become mentors to these kids, helping Pictures of Hope in achieving their mission of reminding them that no dream is unattainable.

We are also challenging our followers to give back to the community by showing that every act of kindness, big or small, leaves a positive impact on communities in our state.

THE TRIAL RUN

NOVEMBER 21, 2015 // DETROIT HELPING DETROIT- DETROIT, MI

We visited Detroit and met volunteers with an organization called Detroit Helping Detroit (DHD). We helped distribute hot food, warm clothes and toiletries to homeless people. In addition to the distribution, we began DHD's rebranding efforts including: redesigning their website and promotional materials, filming testimonials of volunteers and recipients, as well as streamlining their social media presence.
