Creativity Connects Us

WHAT IS OUT OF THE BOX?

It’s a project by ten students from Michigan State University studying journalism, advertising, design, and video production. We’re part of the Media Sandbox, the creative curriculum and community in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.

Last year we embarked on a 1402-mile road trip, stopping in Indianapolis, Nashville, Dallas, and Austin. We spent one day with a non profit organization in each city to help them with their creative needs — web design, branding, social media, video work, and more. Our goal was to get “out of the (sand)box” and into the real world to discover how creativity connects us.

THIS SPRING WE'RE HEADING OUT WEST

We're going to Zion and Bryce national parks in order to help the Disabled Traveler document accessibility and provide them with a  brand redesign.

THE PLAN

This year, we are rebranding one nonprofit: The Disabled Traveler. Our team is creating a new website, logo and social media pages for them so that their information on accessibility can be easily accessed by the public. Besides the rebranding, we’re heading to Zion and Bryce national parks over spring break to document each park’s accessibility features.

THE TRIAL RUN

NOVEMBER 23, 2014 // INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE

We headed to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the closest national park to East Lansing, to test our skills before our trip out west. While we were there, we took photos of accessible features, created an interactive map of the park and made a print brochure that lays out the park’s accessible trails.

The Disabled Traveler

The Disabled Traveler is the principal resource for travelers with accessibility concerns in national parks and beyond. The goal is to remove much of the unknown in our national parks that concerns visitors with a disability or age related difficulties. They accomplish this by photographing national parks and their accessibility, as well as gathering information about each park's accessibility features. The nonprofit is run by Ron Wilmers, his wife Kay, with photography by his son Roger.
