What began as a crazy spring-break-reality-show-road-trip  turned into something so much bigger and better than we ever imagined. So, what is Out of the Box? That’s a great question. It’s a project by ten students from Michigan State University studying journalism, advertising, design, and video production. We’re part of the Media Sandbox, the creative curriculum and community in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. On March 1, we left East Lansing at 6 a.m. for a 1402-mile road trip, stopping in Indianapolis, Nashville, Dallas, and Austin. We spent one day with a non profit organization in each city to help them with all of their creative needs — web design, branding, social media, video work, and more. Our goal was to get “out of the (sand)box” and into the real world to discover how creativity connects us. This spring, we’ll be releasing a documentary of our trip that explores how creativity connects us. Check back often for updates — we can’t wait to share our journey with you!

We set sail from our hometown of East Lansing, Michigan, and stopped in Indianapolis, IN, Nashville, TN, Dallas, TX, and ended in Austin, TX where we attended the SXSW Interactive Festival.

Throughout our trip, we spent one day at each non profit assisting them with their creative needs to help them spread awareness and gain support. We did a bit of preliminary planning, but most of the work was done on that day. Each member of Out of the Box brought something special to the table, be it photography, design, or copywriting — you name it, we did it.
